Nora, the 1 year old polar bear cub at the Portland zoo in Oregon is feeling playful and really wants to interact and show off in her polar bear habitat. When Nora was a new baby polar bear she was abandoned by her mother and has lived at Portland Zoo since September 2016. She is very spirited and interactive with guests at the zoo because she was mostly hand-reared by human's since birth.
Originally there were two polar bears in the enclosure, but the larger Tasul did not get along with Nora during their short time together and Tasul eventually succumbed to ovarian cancer. Nora is planning on moving to new home in October (the Hogle Zoo in Salt Lake City, Utah) where she will get to interact with a polar bear of similar age and size named Hope.
Polar bears are an endangered species who continue to have their natural habitat taken away by the effects of global warming. Being able to see these impressive creatures up close at the zoo helps bring more attention and knowledge to their plight.
